Life on an Offshore Drilling Rig

The galley and mess are normally found on the lower deck. You can find it open almost for 24hour, where you can grab some snacks in between meal times. The quality of food is very good and it may vary from one rig to other. It depends on Chief cook because he is the one who is responsible for the meal, and that’s why cook makes more money offshore.

Today, Most of the oil rig platform, especially the bigger one has a well-equipped gym, TV room for the crew member. Many rigs also provide additional activities like table tennis, pinball machine. All these activities are here to keep you alive and active on a rig. As you know, there are not many non-working hours on an offshore rig. That means all drilling rigs operate continuously. In offshore operations, you often have to work 12 hr a day. You will be on the rig for 2-3 week and then you will get 7 to 14 day off. Right now, there are many offshore positions that involve long working hour.

When you will land on a rig, you will be issued with safety boots, hard hat, safety glasses and coveralls for your protection. Every employee must take in part in a medical examination to make sure; they are suitable for work on an offshore rig. There are smoking rooms at various places on a rig, where safety matches will be supplied. When working on the rig, don’t bring alcohol or any illegal drugs or weapon on the rig. Use of mobile phone is prohibited outside the accommodation block. On the rig, you don’t have to do any cooking, cleaning or even washing of clothes, because it’s all done for you.

Even, an entry-level position on the oil rig makes between 50-80 thousand dollars per annum.
